Trading Domain Names

Some people make money by trading in domain names. The idea is to find good quality unregistered domain names (or expired domains), register them for a few bucks, and then sell them on (either just the domain name, or sometimes with an associated web site). As some domain names have been sold for hundreds, or even thousands of dollars, potentially there can be big profits in this business.

If you would like a guide to this business, take a look at: Of course, just because you register a domain name, it doesn't necessarily mean that you will be able to find a buyer. Thus, it helps to have a good knowledge of what kinds of domains are in-demand, to know how to promote/market your for-sale domains, and to manage the sales process right.

On this site, we have put together a number of pages with information to help you in trading domains:
  • Appraisals
These are services that provide independent valuations of domain names. They can be useful as a sales tool when selling domains, and as a "sanity check" if you are considering buying a domain name from somebody else.

  • Auctions
These are sites where you can auction domain names.

  • Classifieds
These are sites where you can place (or view) classifieds for domain names for sale.

  • Cybersquatting
Cybersquatting is the practice of improperly registering domain names which infringe somebody else's rights. On this page, we discuss the difference between cybersquatting (unethical and potentially illegal) and speculating (ethical and legal).

  • Escrow
Escrow services are services that ensure domain sellers are paid, and domain buyers receive the domain name that they paid for. For your own protection, we recommend that you use an escrow service, at least for all larger transactions.
